Okay there's a lot to unpack and i won't be able to contain myself so...SPOILERS!!!.
Right off the bat lets discuss the Hulk. So when we saw Thanos holding Thor by his head like some giant bully my first thought was if he could do that to Thor then at least there's still Hulk. So when Loki says we have a Hulk you knew we were in for a CGI slugfest the likes of which had not been seen since the last time we saw one.(these things are pretty dime a dozen by now but i digress) but instead of a huge sprawling brawl for it all we got a brutal close quarters methodical beating with more character building than i expected. Thanos made short work of the Hulk no flair no wasted motion he just put him down and Hulk was defeated. So completely that he refused to return for the rest of the movie! The scariest being in the MCU was too afraid to join in the fight against Thanos. Character is so important in these movies but so is action and this movie has a perfect balance of both. The directors have an excellent sense of symmetry they recall even small moments in the mcu's history for awesome payoffs for long term fans, even moments from recent movies like Spiderman homecoming. Think of Peter and Tony's first and last hug and try not to cry.
Iv'e heard a lot of people say this is a Thanos story i can't disagree he was played very well the nuance in the way he moves and the ticks the animators allowed to make it onto the screen are a testament to the marriage of motion capture and performance acting Josh Brolin brought this character to life big purple space bully with a mission to balance the universe by wiping out half of existence and the will to carry that dread goal to fruition.
The chemistry of all the avengers is on point they all have had a deep history after so many movies together each actor gets a moment but there doesnt seem to be any ego (he died in gaurdians vol2) as some characters get hardly any lines or screen time relegating them to essentially cameo status. No one phones it in.
With such a dark subject the balance of humor is well handled the movie isnt funny but our heroes as we know from their solo adventures are hilarious as when Thor meets the Gaurdian's of the galaxy everyone fawns over the god of thunder except Starlord who feels threatened by this muscled space god and mocks him to rest some semblance of command as Thor takes his food his crew and his space shuttle. Or Drax's invisible man scene was comedy gold thanks to Dave Bautsta's dry delivery. Characters meeting for the first time stay in character and interact realistically as when Dr. Strange and Tony Stark make acquaintences and many quippy lines result. the directors are masters of handling big multi-character battle scenes as when Thanos' children arrive in New York to retrieve the time stone from Strange and meet Spider-man, Strange, Wong, Ironman and what would have been Hulk if Banner could have summoned the big green cry baby.
The fight was epic and one of many high stakes battles in the movie and high stakes for real this time because you believe this villain has every intention of carrying out his plan to destroy half of life. they show you in a flash back which also reveals how he became the loving father of Gammora that he has done this before many times, without the stones. and in a story he tells her you can see he genuinely believes its for the greater good that he does what hes doing, so much so that he is willing to sacrifice anything to attain the stones and carry out his plan. When faced with the decision to kill the one he loves in order to obtain the soul stones you can feel the weight of the choice tearing at him as he tosses his favored daughter over a cliff to her death. and is granted his prize. a choice he says cost him everything.
Sacrifice is a big theme in this movie Scarlett witch is asked to destroy the source of her power the infinity stone in Vision's head a move that would destroy Vision who she is in a romantic relationship with. Peter Quill is asked by Gamorra to kill her in the event Thanos gets a hold of her because she knows of the whereabouts of an infinity stone. Dr. Strange sacrifices his stone and his life. Hiemdal and Loki both sacrifice themselves in the first 20 minutes. I think the reason is that this kind of stand against a mad titan can not be won without loss and the mcu has seen very little actual loss until now, because after he obtains the last stone he does the thing hes been threatening to do, he snaps his finger and as promised half of the marvel universe dies so that the other half may live.
I'm not discussing everything that happens or all of the moments big or small that were masterfully shot and performed im talking about how this movie makes you feel. this movie put me through all of the emotions i laughed with my favorite heroes i got angry at my favorite heroes (starlord) i cried (damn you Peter) and it was worth every second leading up to this film, this ties the marvel universe together in such an amazing way so that it will never be the same. If its somehow unclear i loved this movie! Even tho it hurt me. Go see it!
